Marius KentParticipantOne of our managers suggested we do some kind of pay reduction as a penalty. I’m not sure if that’s legal to be honest. Need to look it up. But it would help motivate employees and you could avoid firing them.00

I don’t think it’s the best idea, to be honest. Deducting pay is kind of like paying less per hour than the agreed upon amount. I know it’s a penalty, but the end result is the same, a reduction in hourly rate. If the employee is being paid minimum wage, you could end up paying, effectively, less than minimum wage for the hours worked if you impose a penalty, which would put you afoul not just with the employee’s agreement, but also with state and/or federal law. So it seems like it could be a bad idea and in the worst case, subject you to fines or penalties.
