    A hot topic right now when it comes to advertising is YouTube ads. It’s a new way of marketing that gets seen by billions of people each month. Currently YouTube is the second largest search engine after Google which isn’t really that surprising. They have on average 1.9 billion monthly active users. That is a huge audience for you to get your advertising in front of on a daily basis. You can set yourself a part from over 90% of U.S. business by just creating a YouTube business account. This will give you the chance to get seen without having to do too much extra work in the process.

    Targeting
    Because YouTube is run through Google they have an advanced up-to-date metrics system they is the key in evaluating your advertising strategy. They are able to offer information regarding views, cosys, budget details, audience type and key word selection through AdWords. If you advertise to people who aren’t interested in your product then you’re just wasting money, so their audience targeting tools make it easier to make sure that your ads are getting in front of the correct eyes. Through YouTube you can targe people based on demographics like age, gender, parental status and interests. You can also target custom affinity audiences for example instead of targeting toy enthusiasts, you can target people interested in limited edition action figures. You can also target In-Market audiences, ie people who are actively researching products or services similar to what you are selling.

    Time
    Comparatively to other social media channels, users spend a lot more time when they are browsing through YouTube. This is a great advantage for small business because it gets more attention for their ads.

    Cost
    The question everyone wants to know when it comes to advertising on YouTube, how much does it cost? Well a typical video ads runs between about $0.10 and $0.30 per view. Now there are other factors that play into that, it can depend on your video quality, your target strategy and your overall goal when it comes to your marketing plan.The good thing is Google doesn’t charge you for the first 5 seconds, views do have the option to watch and ad or skip ad. If they watch continue watching the ad then you will be charged.

    Types of Ads

    Bumper Ads
    Bumper Ads – short not skippable ads that are typically 6 seconds max and appear at the end of YouTube videos. They are short and ideal for targeting mobile users.

    Non-Skippable ads
    Pre-roll ads- appear before a video plays
    Mid-roll ads – appear at the midpoint of a 10 minute or longer video

    Although most people do find these ads to be annoying it is a way for people to see your whole add. These are used to tell a deeper story that may require a little more build up then a 6 second ad can deliver. Make sure if you do this type of ad that they are super focused and clearly showcase what you want to display to your audience. Generally non-skippable ads are great for building your brand awareness, but they are CPM, giving you more control over your spend.

    True View Ads

    True View Discovery Ads- Ads that run on YouTube homepage, search results, and/or related videos. When the ad is clicked then the video page will display a banner.

    True View In-Stream Ads – a small portion of the video is played, normally the beginning, these ads can be longer but only the first 5-6 seconds are non-skippable. For this type of ad you will only pay when the view watches at least 30 seconds of the ad, or if they take action on the ad.These ads can also play in other Google display networks like apps or games.

    It is more effective when people choose to watch an ad then when they are forced because you know it is something they are interested in. Then with these you can run a 15-60 second video instead of a short 6 second one.

    These are just the beginning steps in understanding what they basics are in the YouTube advertising world. What will work for you will depend on the business you are running.     So when it comes to creating videos ads are these going to be videos on my page already or will they be specific ads that I create to run? Also which of these options is best for a small business who is just trying to brand themselves?

    I sell things on etsy, would it be stupid for me to try to advertise my shop on youtube? I have a few ideas on ways to advertise I just don’t know if it would make sense because I Wasn’t a service based business

    When it comes to creating ads, is it better to have a professional come in and film it or can someone do it themselves. All the videos I’ve seen look like they are done by a professional and not just some home job.

    You can do either or, now as I said I am not a professional when it comes to this so it will just be my opinion on the matter. I would recommend doing it as a specific ad not just a random video on your page because then you won’t get the information out that you need and it may not be compelling. You could hire someone on Fiverr maybe and have them create a short commercial for you and use the True View video where they can choose to skip after 6 seconds. Just make sure those first 6 seconds reel in your audience. The goal is really to get people to want to go to your page and learn more about your company.

    I wouldn’t say it would be stupid but I haven’t seen it before. That being said it depends on what you are selling, if it is lets say merchandise for a music group, you could advertise on their videos or music videos similar to them. If it is for travel material, you could try to advertise on videos giving tips about travel. It wouldn’t hurt to give it a try!

    Well that would be a personal choice. If you are confident in you skills for making videos then by all means do it yourself! But if you have a very specific idea of what you want and don’t know where to start then looking for help is always great. You may pay a little bit more then making it yourself but it would be worth it. So it depends on our needs really.

    There are a few different ones but an easy way to see how the set up should be would be looking at Google Businesses short videos. They highlight different small companies. Or pay attention to the adds the show up on videos.

    Do you have any way of helping us to focus the audience to be who we want it to be? I wouldn’t want to waste thousands for the video to get seen by the wrong people
